Telehealth Therapy in Florida: What to Expect From a Video Session

Telehealth has made it so much easier to fit therapy into a busy life. If you've never tried a video session, you might be wondering what it's really like. Here's what to expect and how to get the most out of it.
Is telehealth as effective as in-person therapy?
For many concerns, including anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship issues, research shows video therapy can work just as well as meeting in an office. What matters most is the relationship you build with your therapist, not the room you're sitting in.
Who can use it?
Because of state licensing rules, you need to be physically located in Florida during your session. That rule is firm, but it still gives you plenty of flexibility. You can meet from home in Tampa, from your office in Orlando, or from anywhere else in the state.
How to set yourself up
Find a private spot where you won't be overheard. In a pinch, a parked car works great.
Use headphones for privacy and better sound.
Check your internet and charge your device ahead of time.
Log in a few minutes early so tech hiccups don't cut into your session.
Keep water and tissues nearby. It's okay if things get emotional.
What about insurance?
Most insurance plans that cover in-person therapy also cover telehealth. Still, please call the number on your insurance card and confirm your benefits before your first session so there are no surprises.
Can I switch between video and in-person?
Absolutely. Many of our clients mix the two, coming into our Hyde Park office some weeks and meeting by video when life gets busy. We'll work with you to find what fits.
